A walk in the South Downs National Park

On Bank Holiday Monday (26 Aug 2013), I went for an enjoyable walk with my brother Mike.

We walked across part of the Sussex Downs

We started from the 'Smugglers Rest' pub/restaurant in Telscombe, Peacehaven, East Sussex. On my previous visits, some years ago, it was known as the 'Badgers Watch'.

From there, we journeyed over part of the Sussex Downs, starting from Telscombe Tye, an area of common land between the coast and Telscombe Village.

We walked through green and pleasant countryside...

through farmland...

and arrived at the 'Abergavenny Arms' in Rodmell...

We had a couple of pints in the attractive beer garden before restarting our walk back to Telscombe.

NOTE:

About 500 yards down the lane at the side of the pub. is Monk's House, the home of the author Virginia Woolf for twenty-one years until her death in 1941. When I lived in the UK, I was a member of the National Trust and visited the little cottage on two occasions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk%27s_House

England Sept 2012 - Another Day in East Sussex

The South Downs National Park is England's newest National Park. It covers an area of 1,627 square kilometres (628 sq mi) and is 140 kilometres (87 mi) in length. It may be new - it was officially opened in 2011 - but it has been an an area of natural outstanding beauty for centuries. It stretches from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in East Sussex and it skirts the edge of the city of Brighton & Hove where I grew up.

I have many happy memories of visiting some of the nearby parts of the South Downs - like the Devil's Dyke.

One of my favourite bits of this vast area of outstanding beauty is the Seven Sisters, a series of chalk cliffs by the English Channel.

This beautiful area is part of the Seven Sister's Country Park, a popular place for outdoor activities that include walking, birdwatching, cycling and canoeing. Over the years, I have spent many enjoyable hours walking in this part of East Sussex and, when I was younger, I walked most of the South Downs Way with some of my brothers - albeit in separate stretches.

On my recent visit to the UK, I did a short walk in this area with my brother Mike. We started at Friston and walked in the Crowlink area of the park which is owned by the National Trust.

After a pleasant stroll across the Downland we reached the picturesque village of East Dean and made our way to the Tiger Inn. The day has started a tad cloudy but now the sun had come out and we sat in the warm sunshine drinking excellent local beer.

Later we took a different route through Crowlink...

...and arrived back at Friston.

The Rockery near Preston Park is quite spectacular. Here are some of the photographs that I took.

It started to rain so I got on a bus to the Old Steine. It had only been a short shower so I took a photo of the Royal Pavilion...

Then went for a walk along the seafront - the sea was a bit choppy...

I encountered a new statue...

Steve Ovett was a former Olympian. The former middle distance runner was gold medalist in the 800 metres at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. He set world records for 1500 metres and the mile. He still holds the UK record for 2 miles (3,219 m), which he set in 1978. Like me, he was born and bred in Brighton & Hove.

BRIGHTON BANDSTAND

The magnificent structure known as the ‘birdcage’ Bandstand stands is a Grade II listed building of architectural and historical importance. It stands prominent on Brighton’s seafront and commands excellent views of the coast. It was designed by Phillip Lockwood and completed in 1884.
